THE BOWERS “TOWN” REVIEW www.aircharts.com.au 22.04.10, By Nick O’Byrne

This is an historical document, a look inside the venue that started it all.
This is The Bowers, playing “Town”, a highlight from their debut album “Her Night”. Shot during the afternoon at The Tote. Featuring a grand tour of the venue. It’s amazing and timely stuff. The clip was shot the week before The Tote down, the week before thousands of Melbourne’s independent music community gathered spontaneously at it’s wake to voice their ongoing frustration at the Victorian State Governments complacency when dealing with live music.
The Tote is a shell these days, it was stripped by it’s former licensees but the groundswell of support is still there. The liquor licensing restrictions that forced The Tote’s closure remain but SLAM, Fair Go 4 Live Music and Music Victoria continue to pressure the government. Meanwhile, Brisbane is dealing with threats to it’s nightlife and Sydney is still reeling from the closure of it’s most beloved venues. It’s not just a Melbourne thing, it’s Australia-wide.
But this is about the music. Sure the clip is brilliant, but it doesn’t over shaddow the fact that The Bowers play excellent, intelligent, high energy rock and roll.
The pedigree of The Bowers is immaculate. Formed in late 2006, by Phil Gionfriddo, (Spencer P. Jones’ Escape Committee, Dynamo), Liam Linley (Houlette) and Rocket Science’s Paul Maybury and Kit Warhurst, The Bowers quickly rose to prominence with the release of their first 7”, ‘Ivy Climbing’ on Torn & Frayed Records (Dirty Three, Kill Devil Hills). ‘Ivy Climbing’ garnered great support from radio and press, including a marathon 4 week stint on Rage for the clip, and a programming by friends The Drones.
“Town” is vintage guitar pop with an incredible hook. It’s also the sort of music that has been the bread and butter of venues like The Tote for their entire existence. It’s a may be a little old fashioned but damn it’s good.
